The Roman Army School
An annual conference for the study of the Roman army
The Roman Army School brings together leading archaeologists, historians and specialists from Britain and overseas with people who share a serious interest in the Roman army. Each year a theme is explored through lectures, discussion and a field visit.
You do not need to be an academic to attend. All with a genuine interest in the subject are welcome.

Discussion
Time to question speakers, exchange ideas and explore the evidence with fellow delegates in an informal setting.

Field Visits
Expert-led visits place the archaeology in its landscape and bring the conference theme into direct contact with the evidence.
2027 Conference
The Late Roman Army
The 2027 meeting examines the organisation and deployment of the late Roman army in Britain and beyond, including the field army, the Notitia Dignitatum, Julian's eastern campaign, fleets, forts and military clothing.

South Shields Roman Fort
The Sunday programme includes a visit to the late Roman fort at South Shields, led by Nick Hodgson, who will also speak during the conference on Roman forts in Britain and beyond.
